French and Italian Lakes                                         Mid September

This really is a road trip to indulge yourself. Enjoy 3 nights savouring the atmosphere of Lake Garda and 2 nights on the shore of Lake Annecy. Mix in some wonderful hotels with spa facilities, add in fine dining, good wine, and a generous helping of some of the best driving roads through alpine passes and majestic scenery, finish it off with the chance to relax in a beautiful chateau near Reims and you have a holiday to remember forever.

Day 1 Saturday

Total Distance 410m              Driving time approximately 6hr 15m

Leaving on the Eurotunnel our longest drive of the trip takes us along the French autoroutes to the beautiful Parc Naturel Regional des Ballons des Voges where we have our hotel for the evening. Time before dinner to enjoy a swim in the indoor pool or relax in the sauna.

Day 2 Sunday

Total distance 150m               Driving time approximately 3hr 15m 

The drive today is much shorter, allowing us to enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the hotel before we depart. Our journey takes us along the autoroute into Switzerland past Basel and Lucerne where we change direction, pass Lake Sarnen and Lake Lugern and begin our climb through the Alps on some fantastic roads to Innerkirchen and then our first alpine pass of the trip, the famous Grimselpass and back down to Oberwald where we have our hotel for the night.

Day 3 Monday

Total Distance 140m               Driving Time approximately 3h 15m 

Leaving Oberwald we head east and enjoy driving on some great roads, first across the Furkapass to Hospental. Then turning south we take the Saint Gothardpass toward Airolo where we join the motorway for a short distance to Gorduno. Here we leave the motorway and head north east across the beautiful scenic Passo del San Bernadino. At Splugen our direction changes as we once again head south. Using the Splugenpass we drop down into the valley and come to the pretty little Italian town of Chiavenna with the river Mera running through its centre. Time for a coffee, take a few pictures and then off to our hotel near Saint Moritz for dinner.

Day 4 Tuesday

Total distance 155m               Driving time approximately 4hr 15m

Heading north east through the Bregaglia Valley we pass through Saint Moritz. Now we head South through the Bernina Valley and across the Passo del Bernina and enter Italy just before Tirano. A short hop south west then east and then north as we wind our way through the Alps towards Breno. Here we take a left as we head over the Passo di Croce Naomi drive along the west shore of Lake d'Idro and descend toward Salo on the shore of Lake Garda. A short scenic tour around the shore of the lake and we arrive at our hotel, home for the next 3 nights.

Day 5 and 6 Wednesday and Thursday

Free days to relax and enjoy the amenities of the hotel and spa. Explore the lake and the surrounding area. Take a trip to nearby Verona, visit Casa di Giulietta and see Juliet's house and the balcony she is said to have stood upon as she gazed out looking for Romeo. There is plenty to see and do in this beautiful region of Italy.

Day 7 Friday

Distance 267m                       Driving time approximately 4hr 56m

Today we leave Lake Garda and follow the autostrada to Milan then on to Novara, Aosta and Courmayeur. Our road trip takes us through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Chamonix and then begin to drop down through the Alps to Lake Annecy and our hotel for the next two nights.

Day 8 Saturday

Free day to enjoy the hotel and the lake or head into Annecy. Not too far away is the Col du Petite St Bernard where some of the opening scenes from the 1969 Italian Job film were shot on this wonderful scenic road.

Day 9 Sunday

Distance 395m                       Driving time approximately 5hr 55m

Leaving Annecy we return to the autoroute for the journey to our Chateau near Reims. Time to relax in the pool before enjoying a sumptuous dinner and remind ourselves of the wonderful locations, the food and wine, the fantastic roads and the new friendships made.

Day 10 Monday

Distance 150m                      Driving time approximately 2hr 30m

Plenty of time for a leisurely breakfast and then back to Calais for our return Eurotunnel.
