Our Northern Alps tour is a ten-day driving adventure through France, Italy and Switzerland, carefully designed around the roads that make the Alps such an extraordinary place to drive.
Over the course of the tour we cross 18 spectacular Alpine passes, negotiate countless hairpins and tunnels, and travel through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in Europe.
From the shores of Lake Annecy to the legendary Stelvio Pass, from the Grand St Bernard to the Furka, Grimsel and Susten passes, every day brings another memorable road.
And this isn’t simply a route plotted on a map. We have personally driven the route and selected the hotels and restaurants to create a relaxed, sociable driving holiday where the roads are the star of the show.
The Roads
The Northern Alps tour is all about the driving.
Over the course of the tour you’ll experience some of the most famous mountain roads in the Alps, including:

Your Alpine Adventure
Day 1— Saturday 4 September
UK to Burgundy
Approximately 380 miles • 5 hours 30 minutes driving
Our adventure begins at the LeShuttle Flexi Lounge, where there’s time to meet the rest of the group over coffee and croissants before we hand out the roadbooks and radios for the trip.
Once everyone is ready, we board the shuttle and cross to France.
From Calais, we make good progress south on the French autoroutes towards Reims, where we’ll stop to visit the historic former Grand Prix circuit.
There’s time to explore the old pits complex, take photographs of the cars and enjoy the opportunity to drive around the circuit itself.
From Reims we continue south towards our overnight stop at a beautiful château near Dijon.
After a day’s driving, there’s time to relax, explore the grounds and enjoy dinner together.

Day 2 — Sunday 5 September
Dijon to Lake Annecy
Approximately 180 miles • 5 hours 30 minutes driving
We continue south through France before leaving the autoroute behind and beginning to seek out the quieter roads.
Our route takes us through Lons-le-Saunier towards Lac de Vouglans, where we’ll stop for lunch and enjoy panoramic views across the lake.
After lunch, the character of the journey changes completely.
We leave the main roads and head into the Haut-Jura, following smaller roads through the beautiful regional natural park and travelling along part of a route used by the Tour de France.
Eventually we rejoin the main road for the final part of our journey to Lake Annecy, where our hotel awaits on the lakeshore.
It’s a perfect place to unwind after our first real day of Alpine driving.

Day 3 — Monday 6 September
Lake Annecy to the Grand Paradiso
Approximately 130 miles • 4 hours driving
Today is a shorter driving day, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the roads and scenery.
We leave Lake Annecy and follow the shoreline south towards Ugine before turning into the mountains.
The road climbs towards Lac de Roselend, with spectacular views as we make our way towards Bourg-Saint-Maurice.
After lunch, we continue deeper into the Alps before tackling one of the day’s highlights: the Col du Petit St Bernard, rising to 2,188 metres.
The pass has even featured in the classic film The Italian Job.
Crossing the border into Italy, we descend into the Aosta Valley before turning south-east towards the Gran Paradiso National Park and our hotel for the evening.
Another day, another country and another collection of unforgettable Alpine roads.

Day 4 — Tuesday 7 September
Italy to Switzerland via the Grand St Bernard
Approximately 160 miles • 4 hours 45 minutes driving
Today we head north from Italy towards one of the most famous crossings in the Alps.
Passing through Pré-Saint-Didier and Aosta, we climb towards the spectacular Col du Grand St Bernard, reaching 2,469 metres above sea level.
We’ll stop for lunch before continuing into Switzerland and descending towards Martigny.
From here we follow the Rhône Valley for a short distance before leaving the main route once again and heading into the mountains around Unterbäch and Bürchen.
There’s time for an afternoon coffee and a chance to take in the views before descending back towards the valley.
We then continue east towards our hotel near the foot of two of Switzerland’s most famous passes — the Grimsel and Susten.

Day 5 — Wednesday 8 September
Nufenen, San Bernardino & Albula
Approximately 165 miles • 4 hours 15 minutes driving
Today we really begin to rack up the Alpine passes.
Leaving our hotel, we climb into the mountains and head towards the Nufenen Pass, which at 2,478 metres is the highest pass entirely within Switzerland.
From there the route takes us back into Italy before crossing the border once again and heading north towards the spectacular San Bernardino Pass.
At 2,065 metres, the San Bernardino provides another superb section of Alpine driving.
We continue through the mountains towards Tiefencastel before turning south-east and climbing the Albula Pass, at 2,312 metres.
From the summit we descend towards the famous resort of St Moritz, where we’ll spend the next two nights.

Day 6 — Thursday 9 September
The Stelvio
Approximately 127 miles • 4 hours 30 minutes driving
The road you’ve been waiting for
Today brings one of the undisputed highlights of the entire tour: the Stelvio Pass.
But we have some serious Alpine driving to enjoy before we reach it.
Leaving St Moritz, we head south-west towards the Bernina Pass, climbing to 2,328 metres.
We then cross from Switzerland into Italy and enter the spectacular Stelvio National Park.
The road climbs again as we tackle the Passo d’Eira at 2,209 metres and the Passo di Foscagno at 2,291 metres before reaching Bormio.
And then comes the Stelvio.
At 2,759 metres, the Stelvio is one of the world’s most famous driving roads, renowned for its extraordinary sequence of hairpins and dramatic mountain scenery.
We’ll stop at the summit, giving you time to enjoy the views, take photographs and, for those who fancy stretching their legs, walk up towards the small bar and restaurant above the road.
After descending the Stelvio, we continue north through the beautiful walled town of Glorenza before crossing back into Switzerland.
The final pass of the day is the Ofen Pass, at 2,149 metres, before we return to our hotel.
It’s difficult to imagine a better day’s driving.

Day 7 — Friday 10 September
Julier, Albula & Flüela
Approximately 168 miles • 5 hours 15 minutes driving
Our Alpine adventure continues.
Leaving St Moritz, we head north-west across the Julier Pass, reaching 2,284 metres, before tackling the Albula Pass once again.
We then make our way towards Zernez, where we’ll stop for lunch.
Afterwards, the route climbs once more as we head towards Davos via the spectacular Flüela Pass, at 2,383 metres.
From Davos we travel north through the valley towards our evening destination near Disentis.
If time and conditions allow, there may also be an opportunity to take a cable car from Lenzerheide into the mountains.
From the top, the views across the surrounding peaks are spectacular and constantly changing with the Alpine light.

Day 8 — Saturday 11 September
The Four Passes
Four legendary Alpine passes in one spectacular day
Approximately 130miles • 4 hours 30 minutes driving
Today is our final full day of Alpine driving — and we’re going out with a bang.
Rather than simply moving on to our next hotel, we’ll return to the mountains for a final day exploring four of Switzerland’s most spectacular passes.
Our route takes us over:
Oberalp Pass — 2,044m
Furka Pass — 2,431m
Grimsel Pass — 2,164m
Susten Pass — 2,224m
Four passes, countless hairpins and some of the most dramatic scenery of the entire tour.
We’ll take our time on the route, allowing plenty of opportunity to stop, enjoy the scenery and take photographs.
And at the end of the day, rather than continuing north, we’ll return to our hotel for another evening together.
This additional night means you can enjoy the four-pass route without having to rush through it simply to reach the next destination.
After dinner, there’s time to relax and reflect on what has been an extraordinary few days of Alpine driving.

Day 9 — Sunday 12 September
The Alps to Strasbourg
Approximately 259 miles • 4 hours 30 minutes driving
Our Alpine driving adventure may be over, but there’s still one more day on the road.
After breakfast, we leave our hotel and begin the journey north-west towards France.
The route takes us away from the high mountains and through the valleys and countryside of eastern Switzerland before crossing into France.
We continue towards Strasbourg, where we’ll spend our final night.
It’s a more relaxed transition day after the intensity of the Alpine passes, giving everyone time to enjoy the scenery and reflect on the roads we’ve driven.
Tonight we’ll enjoy our final dinner together before the journey home.

Day 10 — Monday 13 September
Strasbourg to the UK
Approximately 390 miles • 5 hours 45 minutes driving
After breakfast, we begin the final leg of our journey towards Calais.
We’ll make our way north through France on the autoroutes before boarding LeShuttle for the crossing back to the UK.
Ten days, nine nights, three countries and 18 Alpine passes later, our Northern Alps adventure comes to an end.
But you’ll be heading home with memories of some of the finest driving roads in Europe — and, no doubt, a long list of roads you’ll want to drive again.
