2024, September 14 – 22, 8 Nights
A relaxing drive through the Bavarian alps. Gentle climbs, beautiful lakes, picturesque towns and villages and superb Bavarian hospitality.
Started in the 1920’s and only recently completed, the Alpine Road takes us on a scenic tour through the beautiful Bavarian alps and lakes. As you would expect in Germany the roads are wide and generous with the occasional hairpin thrown in. Long straights, flowing bends and moderate climbs make this a great driving road. A complete contrast to some of the more traditional Alpine passes with their steep climbs, multiple hairpins and narrow tunnels. Starting at Lindau and heading east some 280 miles of alpine road ends in Berchtesgaden National Park. Passing beautiful crystal clear lakes, fairy tale castles and picturesque villages this really is a relaxing week of fine food, wonderful hotels and fantastic roads.
Day 1 Saturday
Total distance 305 miles. Approximate driving time 4 hours 30 minutes
Our meeting point is LeShuttle flexi lounge. Time to meet everyone over coffee and croissants as we make introductions, hand out the road books and radios. Once everyone is ready we will head onto the next departing shuttle and across to France, starting our journey on the autoroute. Time permitting we will visit the old Grand Prix circuit at Reims, take a few pictures, drive around the circuit and take in the atmosphere of this evocative place. Then its back onto the autoroutes as we head toward Moselle and our hotel for the night.
Day 2 Sunday
Total distance 250 miles. Approximate driving time 4 hours 30 minutes
Leaving our hotel we continue on the autoroute toward Strasbourg where we cross into Germany for our first section of autobahn as we continue our journey for a short while south towards Frieberg. Here we leave the autobahn and head east toward Lake Constance. Our drive takes us along the north shore of the lake to our hotel near Lindau. Time to relax, enjoy a superb dinner on the terrace and watch the sun set over Lake Constance.
Day 3 Monday
Free day to relax. Take the ferry from the hotel and explore Lindau. Take a walk around the little island, enjoy a coffee or a weissbier as you watch the boats slip in and out of the harbour. Take a boat ride around the lake or indulge yourself in a Zeppelin flight and enjoy the sights, sounds and hospitality of this delightful part of Bavaria.
Day 4 Tuesday
Total distance 100 miles. Approximate driving time 2 hours 45 minutes
Heading east from Lindau we take the Alpine road. Keeping the alps on our right we begin our drive through lush green forests. Heading across the Jochpass we come to the village of Hohenschwangau where we can park our cars and take a walk to visit Neuschwanstein, the castle of King Ludwig II. Often referred to as the “fairy tale castle”. There will be plenty of time to take the guided tours of both castles. Alternatively only a few minutes away is the cable car ride up the Tegelberg allowing spectacular aerial views of the castle and surrounds. After our visit we return to the Alpine Road and continue our journey east through Füssen to Wallgau and our hotel for the next two nights.
Day 5 Wednesday
Total distance 175 miles. Approximate driving time 5 hours
Today is a day to enjoy driving along the Alpine Road and some of the other fantastic roads through this beautiful part of the Bavarian alps. Heading south we reach Etal where we turn west toward Grasswang. Crossing the border into Austria we head to Plansee and then Reute. Here we head south west for a while then turn north west to take us to Schatwald, back across into Germany and a change of direction to the north. At Mittelberg we take a right towards Steinach and returning to Reutte we head towards Garmisch Partenkirchen before returning to our hotel for the second night.
Day 6 Thursday

Our final section of this scenic road. Leaving Wallgau we follow the river Isar east, cross the Sylvenstein Stausee, then north to pass the Tegernsee. Passing through some wonderful villages and on to the Chemsee, the deepest and cleanest lake in Germany. Our journey continues as we wind south then east then south again to end the day in the Berchtesgaden National Park where we will be staying for the next 2 nights.
Day 7 Friday
Today we have a free day in the heart of the Berchtesgaden National Park. Enjoy the wonderful spa facilities in the hotel and take a walk around this beautiful town. Take the optional guided tour to the Eagle Nest, Hitler’s alpine retreat and underground bunker complex, only a few miles away. How about an electric boat ride on the Konigsee and a visit to St Bartholomews? Plenty to do and see just a short distance away from our hotel.
